My mother in law Nola was visiting this week, and brought with her this lovely crochet and fabric creation, which she has just finished…
Isn’t it beautiful? And isn’t she clever!
I love that it looks almost antique…
I don’t have an exact pattern to share with you I’m afraid. It came in a quilting pack with all the supplies so I can’t share it here. However if you search online you will find some very similar patterns.
To get you started here’s a good tutorial for making the squares and crocheting them together. The three layer rose is added afterwards when the quilt squares are all joined together… here’s a nice pattern.

I loved this quilt at first sight. So, I’m making one. I was wondering what thread or yarn was used. I settled on Aunt Lydias fashion 5 crochet cotton, but their color choices aren’t nearly as pretsy or subtle as this one. Can you send me in the right direction? Thank you.

The pattern for this quilt says to use DMC Babylo 3 ply Crochet Thread in the 50 gram balls. I am almost finished with my first attempt at this quilt and I am using Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread size 3 in natural and it is looking very nice so far. I think I will order the Babylo for the next one I do though.

Thanks Diana so much for answering my question! I’m using the Aunt Lydias crochet cotton size 3 also. You mentioned that the “pattern calls for DMC Babylo 3 ply ” but I haven’t found THE pattern. The pattern I am using (the only one I can find) calls for fingering weight baby yarn and I didn’t want to use that. Can you tell me where to find the pattern you are using? I am almost finished with the first one and I’m anxious to do another one more like the original one that I fell in love with. Thanks so much!

The original kit with the pattern and fabric was available at http://cottageflair.co.nz but they no longer have the kit. When I called I had to order the pattern and they mailed it to me. But they do have a pdf download of the pattern now on their website as several people mentioned in the comments below and it’s about $12.98 USD. I had a difficult time finding the original fabric because the actual fabric is more soft and muted than the colors in the photos above. The fabric line is called Moda’s Roses and Chocolate by Sentimental Studios. It’s out of print now but you might get lucky. I bought the Roses and Chocolate and then bought several colorways of the Lecien Antique Rose line as I thought it would make a pretty quilt in this style. Good luck!

I’m not sure you wanted the original fabric, Barbara but I checked and you can still find the Moda Roses and Chocolate fabric on Etsy and Ebay and some independent shops using Google shopping and a few shops on http://www.quiltshops.com still have it too.

Almost finished my crochet and fabric quilt. Not as pretty as the original I saw on the Green Dragonfly. It takes many many hours to make. I find that I had to be DEDICATED and DETERMINED to finish. It’s a good project to work on in the evenings watching TV or very portable to take to kids sporting events or doctor appointments, airports, etc. I’d like to make another one with more muted colors. I used various rose prints in greens and pinks and Aunt Lydias size 3 crochet cotton in the color Sage. I’d like to try a smaller ply cotton next time. Also, I used a peel and stick measuring tape to place my base stitches around the squares.

I am in love with this quilt! It is so beautiful! It reminds me of tea settings with beautiful roses and china blue and filigree handles and details on the plates! I wish I knew how to crochet so beautifully, I would endeavor to try to make this!

I made a smaller version but the colors (to me) were too strong. So I started a other one with strictly blues and pinks and using size 10 crochet thread in a grey color ( olor name is cloud). I finished sewing the squares together and I’m working on the crochet around squares. It’s coming out great. A LOT of work and time involved but I think it will be worth it in the end.

Thank you. I will be making one. It will probably take most of the school year, my nephew graduates next year and this will be his graduation quilt. (for his mom). I will print his photos on fabric, and crochet them together. I can use 1 photo on each side and will get to pick more photos.

It is so beautiful Janette, it brings back happy memories of my own Mum-in-law, who taught me how to crochet and sew. She once made a quilt and matching curtains from squares of material that she cut out of oddments – they are so fashionable now. I’ve got fabric for blankets just waiting for a project like this. I didn’t have a specific technique in mind. My inital thought was to just crochet edging on the fabric, but thank you so much for sharing your Mother-In-Laws patch-work and the links that you included. I now have a much better idea of how to proceed.

Your crochet and fabric quilt is. absolutely gorgeous!!!Is it for sale?I love it,and I’m disabled,most days bedridden because of cirrhosis from hereditary cholesterol and I would love this on my bed.All my organs are starting to fail,losing lots of blood and had 14 transfusions and just one platelets only,have had ulcers from very severe fluid retention and they were to the bone,because lack of blood,they wouldn’t heal,2 times half my blood was missing,took 2 1/2 years to heal.I have to watch my ammonia level close,can’t be high because it can cause coma or death and makes me very very sick before a coma,it’s hard because it happens very quickly.I have enlarged spleen,tiny blood vessels in intestines,and they cause bleeding when I eat and the other thing people all people do after eating I’ll say,to be nice not nasty.My legs cracks open so bad because they triple or quadruple,that however bad they get,and basically have to regrow all the bottom parts of my legs and top of feet too.Anyway I love handmade quilts,my mom use to make several burgers not able now.If you can please text or message me about that quilt and others too,please ma’am.I’m a country girl from Tennessee.

The pattern is not listed on their website. You will have to call them to order it. Very nice people work there and they shipped my pattern the same day. Just takes awhile to make it to the US.

Of course, I pinned this gorgeous quilt, and the wheels started turning. I purchased an old Arch quilt that is “seriously ill” , but was too beautiful to pass up for $8! After seeing this beauty, I think I’ll cut it into squares and make a quilt like this out of it! I have a beautiful xroxhet lace pattern that I can use to join the squares! Thank you so much for sharing this. Your mother in law did a lovely job to make such a beautiful quilt. My sister (the crocheter) and I (the quilter) are looking to work on this together as a sister’s quilt. We might have to make two since we don’t want to have to squabble over who gets the finished quilt.
By any chance, do you have a pattern for the crocheted piece in your “logo”. My 88 year old mother has fallen in love with it and would love to try the pattern. She still makes baby quilts for great grand babies and they are loved by all, especially the babies.

The pattern can be found in “Home Decorating with Knitting & Crochet” published in 1973. It was distributed by National Handcraft Institute, Inc. 1425 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50337. The pattern was entitled ” Patchwork with a Difference”, however, I have always referred to it as a “Fusion Quilt” and tutorials are available online by searching Fusion Quilt or Fusion Quilt Crochet.
