Crafting and a yummy scone recipe

I didn’t quite get my usual weekend post up, so here it is on Monday night instead!

This weekend marked the end of the school holidays, so yesterday was a day for getting clothes, bags and books in order. Not to mention children and husbands. Doing the grocery shop (and spending an ridiculous amount of money on food), and a little baking to fill the tins so we can have a sweet snack with our packed lunches (and maybe, just maybe, at night when curled up on the couch with a cup of tea…). Before I knew it, it was Monday morning and the usual blur which marks the start of the week was upon us.

Yesterday I finished up a project Ive been working on for some time. It turned out really nicely. Here’s a couple of shots as I sewed the last few details in place:Flower bagOnce Ive got some ‘proper’ photos Ill share the whole project with you…Flower bag 2Maia had her friend over, and because it was raining, we spent the afternoon sewing. Which was a lot of fun… well, it was fun, but it was hard work to be the sewing instructor to two six year olds, what with re-threading needles and fixing up tangles 🙂 Lets just say there wasn’t time to get much else done – but they were so proud of the end results…Starry night pillowThe project came from a sewing book called Sew together, Grow together. I’ll be giving a full review of the book (and giving a copy away) once we have had a chance to complete a few more of the projects, so keep an eye out for that in the next week or so.

And on the topic of 6 year olds I also whipped up some cute crochet anklets and bracelets…Crochet anklet braceletYep, Ill have to write up a post on those soon too!

Finally, since this is a random post anyway (I know you guys put up with that a lot!), we made – and by ‘we’, I have to confess right up front, I mean my husband (because I know Ill get pulled up on this as soon as he reads this post) these gorgeous scones:

Wholemeal sconesThey were healthy, moist and delicious…

Wholemeal scones 2And then I slathered butter and plum jam all over them. So they were still moist and even MORE delicious!

If you enjoy a batch of fresh scones straight from the oven – perfect weekend afternoon food in my opinion – do give them a try:
Edmonds wholmeal sconesIf the photo looks a little blurry click on it and you’ll get a full screen shot. Straight from the Edmonds Cookery Book (a New Zealand baking icon), and VERY tasty!

How was your weekend? What did you get up to? xo Janette

Looking really good and has given me some inspiration for some cushion covers I’ve been meaning to make for a long time. Can’t wait for my toddlers to be old enough to try some crafts 🙂 Looking forward to the final photos 🙂

It’s good to see those talents being passed on. I think it is so important to give them confidence in their approach to their own craft work, whatever that may be, in the future.
Loving those wholemeal scones. Will be running a batch of those up soon. I like the idea of using a fruit yoghurt in them. What did you use?

I agree, I was lucky enough to have sewing knitting and crochet passed on from my grandmother and mother, and I want my children to learn (and love!) these crafts too! I used a mixed berry esiyo, we eat a lot of yoghurt so make our own in 1 litre batches! YUM!

    Hi Janette,
Yes, sewing with 6 year olds is very very exhausting, but it looks like Maia and her fiend are doing a pretty good job! I’m looking forward to seeing the finished projects. Your scones look delicious (and healthy)…I think I might just have to make some tomorrow.

Just so I don’t have to look these up. What exactly is wholemeal flour and what would I recognize it as. Also 50g butter – how many TBL? These look yummy and I would like to make them, drool, drool.

Also I LOVE your crochet flowers. Where do you get your pattern? Want to do those too. 🙂

I just checked out your book and need to get that myself. I am laughing with you at the picture of your having to rethread needles. I have to do that all the time for my grand children who love to sew with me.
