A quickly finished crochet shrug which I made for Maia last night. It started life as a shawl/wrap for me, but when I got to this point, I wondered what would happen if I created arm holes.. by sewing the two edges under; this is the result.I like that it is longer in the back and fitting around her arms/front, it just gives a nice amount of warmth for this time of year. If you would like to re-create shrug, I used this free pattern over at miliboo, using a 4ply yarn (it actually may be even 3 ply, it’s pretty fine) and a 5mm hook. I followed the instructions exactly until it was 15 rows long – then joined under and sewed the long ends up (about an inch in each side) to create armholes and single crocheted around the entire front/neck edge to finish. It hasn’t been blocked as she wore it today and loved it, Ill probably wash it and block it lightly at the weekend. Maia is almost 6 and this fits her generously, I’d imagine it would fit a child up to about 10, there is plenty of stretch in the pattern.
In case you are wondering she is working on math problems while eating breakfast (personally that would give me indigestion!!!). Hope you are having a really lovely day! Janette xx
What a sweet idea…. it looks great on Maia and could be adapted endlessly with different patterns. Maths and breakfast… my poor brain wouldn’t be awake enough! Hugs, Jill x

This is great. I have a little girl in my life (10 yrs) who would adore this. I love the way it is quick to make too.

It is beautifully girly things like that shrug that make me wish I had a little girl instead of two little boys. There is just so much more you can make for girls!

What a pretty pattern. Little Son does maths late while in bed ‘settling down’ – there’s no accounting for taste!

I absolutely love this and will be making one for my 13 year old granddaughter. I’ve been racking my brains for something I would be able to do in the time left, and which she would like enough to actually wear! Thanks for sharing! ~ Linne

What does “blocking” mean? (I am from Germany) Thank you! This looks lovely and i want to make it for my daughter!

Blocking is where you dampen the completed garment and ease it into shape, usually with the help of pins. I still haven’t blocked this shrug, I wouldn’t worry about it 🙂

Do you have to block a garment?

You could, if you wanted. I was going to but never got around to it and it’s just fine. I guess a lot would depend on how it looked when you had finished. J

Hi it’s working, in the text click on ‘this free pattern over at miliboo…’ It’s for a shawl tho, you need to follow the directions to make a shrug.
