My husband recently requested a hat. A plain one please. In black. No fancy bits. Could it look like this… produces a photo of a knitted hat? With a brim too. Me: ok, so let me check I’ve got it all… plain, black, if possible with a brim? Yep, that’d be good…
The knitted part obviously didn’t happen, but he was pretty happy with the hat, which turned out like this, using 8ply possum merino mix and a 4mm hook:
Here’s the pattern if you would like to make one for your man (or yourself even!).
Crochet Manly Man Hat:
Make a magic circle and ch1, 5 sc into the ring (6sc).
Use a stitch marker at the start of each round, do not join… this means there will be no seam at the back of the hat (yay!)
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around (12)
Round 3: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next st, repeat around (18)
Round 4: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 2 stitches, repeat around (24)
Round 5: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 3 stitches, repeat around (30)
Round 6: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 4 stitches, repeat around (36)
Round 7: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 5 stitches, repeat around (42)
Round 8: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 6 stitches, repeat around (48).
Round 9: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 7 stitches, repeat around (54)
Round 10: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 8 stitches, repeat around (60)
Round 11: 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 9 stitches, repeat around (66)
At this point you can continue adding more rounds for a bigger head, but remember that the hat will grow quite a bit more as you do your following (non-increase) rounds. Id say 66 is a medium size head, and 72 or 78 for a large head.
Rounds 12 – 35: Sc in each stitch around. Fasten off.
Now we will make the brim…
Top Side: Using a couple of stitch markers, mark out 22 stitches on front center of hat.
Row 1: With right side facing, join yarn in first marked st, working in front loops only, sc in each of the 22 stitches.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in back loops in next 4 stitches on the hat (26)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in front loops in next 4 stitches on the hat (30)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in back loop in next stitch on the hat (31)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in front loop in next stitch on the hat (32)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in back loop in next stitch on the hat (33)
Fasten off.
Bottom Side
Row 1: With wrong side facing, join yarn on wrong side of Row 1 of brim, sc in back loops of first 22 stitches.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in front loops in next 4 stitches on the hat (26)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in back loops in next 4 stitches on the hat (30)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in front loop in next stitch on the hat (31)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in back loop in next stitch on the hat (32)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, sc in front loop in next stitch on the hat (33)
Fasten off.
You will need to make a plastic or heavy cardboard brim to fit inside the pieces you have just crocheted. I used the cut down brim from an old hat we had, which worked out well.
Fit the brim piece inside the two pieces and sew the front edge to enclose it. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
I lined this hat, so tomorrow Ill share a tutorial about how to make a lining for any crochet hat.

Edited to add; here is the link for the tutorial to add a lining to this (or any) hat: here

Love the hat I just had a request for a mans hat and was stumped. Also, where did you find your header. I want to change mine, but could not find one I liked

Hi Arline, I’m do glad you liked it! I made the header using picmonkey which is a free website using one of my own photos. It’s a very cool site for all kinds of photo editing.

Better a plastic brim than a heavy cardboard one, otherwise when you may get some troubles when you wash it.
Great tutorial as always. Thanks Janette.
BTW, I also like your snow trip article. It is a great way for me to discover New Zealand.

I was going to use cardboard too but thought better for that exact reason, plus he’s likely to wear it in the rain! You will have to come for a visit!

I love this. So would my son. I might try plastic mesh for the brim.

Great man hat, love the style and colour, you did a great job, I like the tute above for the lining too (sorry I’m reading backwards!) it’s hard to do man pressies in crochet and get it right, but you hit the nail on the head!

I love it…so manly. I totally agree with the others….men are picky when it comes to crochet. This would be perfect. Thanks so much for sharing the pattern.

Nice hat; using the brim from an old ball cap is a really good idea.

Hi! This hat looks great. I am just making it. Done with the hat. I don’t know if I understand the brim part right. When you say “sc in each stitch across, sc in back loops in next 4 stitches on the hat” what do you mean? Which 4 stitches? The last 4 stitches?
Thanks a lot for the pattern again!

Sorry I think I got it. You mean after the 22 stitches.

Yes after the 22 stitches (on the hat) sc in the back loops of the next four stitches- past the brim edge.

That’s the kind of pattern I have been looking for! I look everywhere for a billed warm hat. Nerve damage from Bells Palsy makes my head sensitve to cold or even cool temps and wind. The bill keeps the sun or rain off my glasses. I will give this a try even though I haven’t done any crochet in several years. I’ll check out more of your site. Sent by livingsimplyfree.

Love this hat and would like to make one for my son in law’s but have no idea how much wool I will need to make it.
I am new to crochet and haven’t knitted for years, do I assume 8ply is the equivalent to double knit?
Thank you for sharing. Julia

Hi Julia, 8ply and double knitting are the same weight. A couple of people on ravelry have mentioned that they thought this hat made up smll, so please try it on before you finish up to make sure it fits. Good luck! Janette xx

Thank you for that Janette. Do I assume a 50gram ball would be enough per hat? Julia

Hi Roy, you just keep working around in a continuous circle not stopping at the end of each row. Hope that helps! Janette

Yes, what makes the hat stay nice and snug on the head, is it the type of yarn, I have worsted-4- 100% Acrylic, is this OK, I made the hat, 17 rolls so far, is curves up or down some, but doesn’t seen to be stretchy enough to that I’m wondering how it will set on my head like it should…. If the trick is in the yarn, then I’ll buy what I need.. So what kind did you use to make this hat… HELP, lol, and I really appreciate your in-put……thanks, Roy

Hi Roy, you could try asking for DK (double knit) or light worsted yarn. J

At the beginning of the hat when you say repeat around, do you mean single crochets in each stitch, or repeat the 2sc, etc?
Thanks!

Lovely hat…. Can you help me, what was the hat height when u finished the SC rounds…??? N size too…
LikeLike
I don’t get the brim part.. when I tried it, I get holes on the sides ad it reaches down from the height built up by the SCs to the next stitch on the hat which is the base.. if that makes sense.. is that how it’s supposed to be?
