Carter’s favourite thing right now are dinosaurs and dragons…So I made him a cute dinosaur man:You can find the pattern over here at Owlishly. And a matching dinosaur hat…Carter’s Dinosaur hat:
Using DK weight yarn and a 4mm hook (this hat fits my fairly large headed 3 year old):
Round 1: Make a magic circle and chain 2, half double crochet (HDC) 7 x into the circle and pull tight, join to top of chain 2 (8).
Round 2: Chain 2 (counts as first HDC here and throughout), HDC into same stitch, 2 HDC into every stitch around, join to top of chain 2 (16).
Round 3: Chain 2, 2HDC into next stitch. 1HDC into next stitch, 2HDCinto next stitch around, join to top of chain 2 (24).
Round 4: Chain2, HDC in next stitch, 2HDC in next, *HDC in next 2 stitches, 2HDCin next stitch*, repeat between * and * around, join to top of chain 2 (32).
Round 5: Chain2, HDC in next two stitches, 2HDCin next, *HDC in next 3 stitches, 2HDC in next stitch*, repeat between * and * around, join to top of chain 2 (38).
Round 6: Chain2, HDC in next three stitches, 2HDC in next, *HDC in next 4 stitches, 2HDCin next stitch*, repeat between * and * around, join to top of chain 2 (44).
Round 7: Chain2, HDC in next four stitches, 2HDC in next, *HDC in next 5 stitches, 2HDC in next stitch*, repeat between * and * around, join to top of chain 2 (50).
Round 8: Chain2, HDC in next five stitches, 2HDC in next, *HDC in next 6 stitches, 2HDC in next stitch*, repeat between * and * around, join to top of chain 2 (56).
Round 9: Chain2, HDC in next six stitches, 2HDC in next, *HDC in next 7 stitches, 2HDC in next stitch*, repeat between * and * around, join to top of chain 2 (60).
If you need to, add another round or two or three to make a bigger hat and follow the same pattern. Obviously if you are making a smaller hat you will need to make it a round or two smaller.
Round 10 – 20:Chain 2, and then HDC into each stitch around, joining each round as you go. At this point you want to make the hat as long as it needs to be – remembering there will be one more row around the entire hat which will add a little (about 1cm) length. Fasten off.
Join contrasting colour to center back, chain 1 and single crochet around hat. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Spikes:
Make a magic circle, Ch2 and HDC 5 into the magic circle. Do not join, but pull magic circle tight. Use a stitch marker to mark each round.
Round 2: Hdc in each stitch around (6)
Round 3: 2hdc, hdc around (9)
Round 4: Hdc in each stitch around (9)
Round 5: 2hdc, hdc around, 2hdc in last stitch (14)
Round 6: Hdc in each stitch around (14)
Round 7: 2hdc, hdc around (21)
Round 8: 2hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 18, 2hdc in next stitch, hdc in last stitch (23) ss into next stitch, fasten off leaving long end.
I made 5 spikes, but you can make as many as you like. Use the long end to sew the spikes into position down the center back of your hat. Weave in all ends and that’s it you’re all done… ROAR!
How I love that face! Hope you are having a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat week! Jxx

I run a non-profit for children in the Northern Plains that I fund myself by making childrens hats for sale. I designed my own dinosaur hats two years ago and I also designed my own sock monkey hats, a horse, nascar, etc etc. I still tend to make more styles for little girls than little boys but my selection of boy hats has grown quite a bit now. Your toy and hat are lovely and I love the smile it put on the face you love!

fantastic!!!! I would like my big boy (a dinosaur lover, too) back at the same age as your Carter…
now he is 13 and 1/2 and I think he would never wear a hat like that one….sigh!!

Love the mini dinosaur, really cute! I made a green and orange hat like that for my littlest boy about a year ago, it was a little neat, so maybe I should make another.

I wanted to let you know that I finally posted the granny dresses, which were inspired by yours. I have to clarify that I did not make them, but my aunt. Nonetheless, I wanted to let you know, and thank you for the inspiration. I mentioned you and your blog…and I hope you don´t mind.
Here is the link, if you want to give it a look:
