Princess Poppy

Once upon a time there lived a beautiful princess, the fairest in all the land…. she had long golden hair, and beautiful red lips, but she didn’t have a name. Days past and the people of her kingdom had not been able to think of a name that suited such a beautiful princess.

One day a little girl call Maia came to the kingdom and thought that the name Poppy suited the princess (it was ANZAC day after all), and everyone agreed, it was a beautiful name for a beautiful princess… so from that day forth her name was Princess Poppy!

She’s a lovely simple doll, which Maia has already had much joy from… and Im sure there is a little girl you love who would love to have a princess just like Poppy too!

Simple Crochet Doll Pattern: Princess Poppy

DK weight yarn in white or skin colour

Scrap yarn for dress, bloomers, shoes, socks, hair, eyes and mouth.

3mm and 4mm crochet hook.

Head:
Using the 3mm hook and white yarn make a magic circle and Single Crochet (sc) 8 times into the circle. Do not join (use a stitch marker to mark each round).

Round 1: 2 sc in each stitch around.

Round 2: 2  sc in first stitch sc in next 2 around.

Round 3 – 10: Sc in each stitch around.

Round 11: *Sc 2 together, sc in next 2*, repeat between * and * around.

Round 12: *Sc 2 together, sc next 1*, repeat between * and * around. Stuff head (I use cotton balls to do this).

Round 13: Sc 2 together around until hole is closed, fasten off leave long end.

Legs:

(Make 2) Chain 10, join with a ss. Sc in each stitch around for 25 rounds. Sc 2 together sc in next x 4, fasten off. Sew end together (this is the foot). Lightly stuff or inset a pipe cleaner in matching color.

Arms:

(Make 2) Chain 6, join with ss. Sc in each stitch around for 20 rounds. Fasten off. Sew end together to form hands. Lightly stuff or inset a pipe cleaner in matching color.

Body:

Chain 11 turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each stitch across. Turn ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn chain 1, sc on each st across. Turn and sc around piece working around the outside of the rectangle, continue working in rounds for 18 rounds. Stuff and ss across top to join sides together. Fasten off.

Join head to shoulders (this is the joined seam of body), and attach arms and legs securely. I lightly stuff arms and legs, or alternatively put a (white) pipe cleaner into each arm and leg to allow them to be posed.

Hair:

Once the doll is assembled, using the yarn you will use for her hair to make a hair cap by crocheting the head for the first 8 rounds.

Sew onto head, then using a crochet hook, pull lengths of yarn through the cap and tie together to secure in place and form hair. Once you are satisfied that the doll has enough hair cut to even length.

Face:

Using embroidery thread sew eyes and mouth in place. Add a little pink blush to cheeks for extra cuteness 🙂

Dress:

Using 4mm hook. Make bodice – working from side to side: Chain 10, turn. Half Double Crochet (Hdc) in second ch – in back loops only – and each ch across, ch 2 turn.

Repeat for 19 rows check against doll. Ch 1 at end of last row and turn and sc into each stitch along long edge. Ch 2 turn.

Make skirt: Row 1: Dc into same st, ch 1, skip 2 stitches and 2dc into next stitch. Repeat across. Ch 2 turn.

Row 2: Dc into same st, 3 dc into each ch 1 space across. 1dc into last stitch.

Row 3: Ch2, dc into first space, then 3dc into each space between clusters across. Ch 2 turn.

Row 4 – 7: Dc into same st. 4dc into each space between clusters across. Ch 2 turn. Repeat this row 4 more times.

Sew back seam of dress together.

Picot edge. Join into a space between two clusters at back. Ch1, 3dc, hdc, sc into space, sc into next stitch, 2dc into next st, sc into next st. *Hdc, 3dc, hdc, sc into space, sc into next stitch, 2dc into next st, sc into next st*, repeat between * and * around dress hem. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Bloomers:

Using 4mm hook. Chain 20. Sc into each stitch in a continuous spiral for 5 Rounds.

Round 6, sc in first 10 stitches, ch 3 and join in opposite side, continuing working in rounds for first leg for 7 rounds.  Picot edge: 2dc in first stitch, ss in next around. Fasten off.  Join on opposite leg sc into every stitch around leg (including across the ch 3) for 7 rounds. Picot edge: 2dc in first stitch, ss in next around. Fasten off.

Shoes and socks (make 2):

Round 1: With contrasting yarn and 4mm hook, Ch 7 join with a ss.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2sc in next sticth, sc in next, 2sc in next, sc in next, 2sc in next, sc in last stitch.

Round 3 – 5: Sc in each st around.

Change to pink and sc around for 7 rounds. Fasten off and sew seam at bottom.

Cardigan.

Yep you guessed it, this is another Granny Shrug.  You can find out how to make one here (for Princess Poppy you only need to make 3 rounds per piece, using DK yarn and a 4mm hook. Then sew it together across the shoulder and center back). Maia loves that both her and I have one too!

Crown:

For the crown I used a 3mm hook and some metallic embroidery thread which was rather stiff.

Chain 48. Join with a ss to complete the round and check at this point that it fits easily around doll’s head.

Ch 1 and sc in every stitch around, repeat.

Slip stitch in first 6 stitches. Sc in next 3 stitches. Ch4 sc in same stitch, sc in next stitch, ch6 sc in same stitch, sc in next stitch, chain 4 sc in same stitch, sc in next 3 stitches. Repeat 3 more times, ss in next stitch fasten off. Weave in ends.
