Autumn hat…

Here’s a cute and easy autumnal hat to make for yourself or a loved one… you all know how much I love the humble granny, so here is a hat version!

Just right for the changing seasons, not too warm – you could even make it in cotton for spring.

I confess I chose the gray last night when Maia was asleep, she was certain to have chosen pink.  I love gray, and I think I might have to make one for myself next!

Crochet Autumn Hat Pattern:

This pattern will make a hat that is big enough for a child (there’s a fair bit of stretch in them, I can fit it but its a bit on the snug side) so if you want to make one for an adult Id suggest adding another hdc in the first round. Alternatively you could stick with the pattern and use a heavier yarn and larger hook.

8ply (DK) weight yarn and 3 or 3.5mm hook.

Round 1. Make a magic circle and chain (ch) 3, half double crochet (hdc), ch1  7 tiimes and join with a ss to the 2nd ch at the beginning to close the round. 8 hdc with ch1 spaces.

Round 2. Ch2, *double crochet (dc) x 2 , ch1 into next ch1 space*, repeat between * and * 7 times, 1dc into last space, join with ss to top of ch 2. 8 2dc pairs with ch1 spaces.

Round 3. Ss into the next ch 1 space, ch2 and dc into same space, ch1, 2dc and ch 1 into each space around (between each dc AND in each ch1 space). Join with ss to top of ch2. 16 2dc pairs with ch1 spaces.

Round 4. Ss into the next ch 1space, chain 2 and dc into same space, ch 2. 2dc and ch2 into each ch1 space around. Join with a ss to finish the round. 16 2dc pairs separated by ch2 spaces.

Round 5. Ss into the next ch2 space. Chain 2, 2 dc into same space, ch2. 3dc and ch2 into each ch 2 space around. Join with a ss to finish the round. 16 3dc groups separated by ch2 spaces.

Round 6 – 14. Repeat round 5 nine more times and try on head to see if it’s almost long enough (still the band to go so it will be about 2cm longer when completed). Once you are happy with the length Ch1 and single crochet into each stitch around and 2sc into each 2ch space, do not join the round with a ss, but continue working in rounds until 4 rounds are completed and join with a ss to finish the final round.  Weave in all ends.

Make a flower and sew in place. I used this one adding an extra round of petals, but any flower of your choice is bound to look lovely.
